What Will You Learn?

Advanced Brush Up focuses on introducing dogs and handlers to specific actions expected in a Pre-Novice and/or Novice Trial environment. Dogs should possess a solid foundation in basic heeling, sit, down, and stay. Fundamental obedience skills are fine tuned and new skills are introduced including fronts and finishes, stand for examination, figure 8's, long sits and downs, leave your dog and get your leash, off leash focused heeling, and use of the target plate. Games like "find heel" "circle and twist" help to make the skills fun for you and your dog. We may even try some jumps and retrieves. While trialing is not a requirement, we encourage our students to consider all options.

What to Bring

Bring plenty of high-value small treats to reward your dog. You will probably need more than you think you will need! Bring a bowl so that you can water your dog. You should have a 6 foot leash and a shorter leash or collar tab (parachute cord works well) as this class will include some off- leash work and the short tab gives handlers something with which to offer subtle direction. NOTE: retractable leashes are NOT suitable for Obedience classes). When you contact Leslie, you will discuss what type of collar is best suited for your dog for class- different dogs have different needs. Note that for people hoping to enter obedience trials, harnesses are not permitted in trials.
