Beginner Brush-Up

Begin your registration by emailing Leslie Gardiner. Leslie will help to determine if this class is a good fit for you and your dog; instructor permission is required for registration in this class.
Handlers must provide proof of UTD vaccinations for their dog.

What Will You Learn?
The Beginner Brush-up class is designed for you to have an opportunity to fine tune and polish the skills that were introduced in the Beginner class in a group setting that provides distractions and a skilled instructor. Teams will continue working on impulse training, focus, sit, stay, down, recall, and beginning to develop a correct heel position. Heeling will introduce forward, fast, slow, right turn, about turn, and halt with automatic sit. It is in this class that we will begin to mention "trialing" and we will discuss trial opportunities for you and your dog.
Remember that Obedience requires homework- a little practice each day will help your dog to reinforce the skills you learn in class and for you to develop your handling skills.
What to Bring
Bring plenty of high-value small treats to reward your dog. You will probably need more than you think you will need! Bring a bowl so that you can water your dog. You should have a 6 foot leash (retractable leashes are NOT suitable for Obedience classes). When you contact Leslie, you will discuss what type of collar or harness is best suited for your dog for class- different dogs have different needs. Note that for people hoping to enter obedience trials, harnesses are not permitted in trials.
