Open and Beginner Open

Begin your registration by emailing Leslie Gardiner. The Beginner Open Class and the Open Class  require Instructor permission. Beginner Open teams should have at least one "Q" in a Novice Obedience Trial. The Open class is for teams that already have some experience working on Open skills and who may already have their Open Obedience legs underway.

Handlers must provide proof of UTD vaccinations for their dog.

What Will You Learn?

Dogs should have a solid mastery of Novice Obedience (foundation) skills before considering registration in this class and at least one "pass" in a novice trial. The Beginner Open Class introduces the skills that will be required in the Open Obedience classes and provides practice time for new skills including drop on recall, retrieve on flat, retrieve over high jump, broad jump, change of positions, sit/down or stand- get your leash.

The Open Class is for dogs who are currently working on open or who may already have their open legs underway. Some Utility level skills may also be introduced. Play, reward, marker words and focus are all important components of training at this level. While all qualified dogs are welcome, this is a class designed for dogs and handlers who are planning to trial.

What to Bring

Bring plenty of high-value small treats to reward your dog. You will probably need more than you think you will need! Bring a bowl so that you can water your dog. You should have a competition leash and collar tab (parachute cord works well) as this class includes off- leash work and the short tab gives handlers something with which to offer subtle direction.  You will require a dumbbell suited to the size of your dog for retrieves. CDOTC provides CKC approved jumps. If you are in the Open Class and you have scent articles, and a glove, bring these as well.
